Your Employer Checklist

We strongly believe that Fortis Investments is the ideal place for ambitious and talented individuals to embark upon a challenging and fulfilling career. To help you when making your decision about which companies to apply to, please consider the following points:

1) Does the company have a clear business strategy that it can articulate to you?

We believe you need to know where the organisation, and therefore your career, is heading. What do they want to be? The answer to this question will have a great impact upon your own development.

2) Will you be provided with international assignments and development opportunities in your first 2-3 years?

As asset management is a global industry, those wishing to succeed at the highest levels will unquestionably benefit from international experience at an early stage in their career.

3) Will the firm invest in your preparation for CFA, a detailed Personal Development Plan and other important business skills?

Your education has only just started. Experience is of great importance, but continuous professional development is vital for modern investors. Organisations that do not invest in their graduates are sending a clear message that career development is not really seen as important.

4) Does the company have a parent organisation behind it that helps provide a stable employment environment?

Is the organisation financially secure? Does it have the scale and infrastructure to provide investment for the future? Can it weather market changes and short-term difficulties? How safe will your position be in turbulent times?

5) Do you like the people you have met and the culture that you have seen?

Investments is a people-led business. Complete trust in your colleagues and a supportive working environment are essential to your enjoyment of your role. Make sure that you will be happy working with the people you have met.

6) Will you have the opportunity to earn immediate financial rewards based on your own performance?

Do you have evidence that the organisation is able to differentiate, recognise and reward high performance? Equally, do you want to work in a safe environment where pay is less but so is risk? You need to think about where you will best thrive and fulfil your personal ambitions.

7) Is the organisation a true meritocracy?

Will you be able to progress unhindered on the basis of your capability and performance alone? Does the culture of the business promote this, and is this visible through the style of management?

If you can’t answer yes to the majority of these questions, or you do not believe that they are important, it is likely that you are not choosing the company most suited to your requirements. We recommend that you reconsider the organisations you are thinking about working for.
